Course Title: Cultural competency with regard to Islam and Muslims

Course Description:

During the hours we spend together we will talk about Islam and Muslims Beliefs and Practices, the Demographics and show some short video clips that we will discuss. We also plan to highlight American Muslims and the challenges they face in being immigrants, refugees, converts, American Muslims who have been here for generations, descendants of slaves etc. We will also look at these dynamics of culture and religion in conducting prevention and treatment related programs and services.

 

Learning Objectives:

1.Attendees will be able to understand who Muslims are – demographics/populations and definitions.

2. Attendees will have some knowledge about Islam in terms of beliefs and practices and stereotypes.

3. Attendees will gain knowledge and information about what it is like for Muslims in America – what are some of the challenges.  

 

This interactive training is limited up to 25 participants to allow for activities, dialogue and information and resource exchanges.

  • Optional: Lunch is available for $8.00 through this site, or you may bring your own lunch, or buy lunch outside our offices. Lunch is to be held from after the event. You may stay here at this time if you would like to eat with colleagues or just to network!
  • In case of cancellations or changes, attendees will be notified by email if possible. A message will also be left at MLI (203-691-1486) by 7 am on the day of the event.

  • This event is Free  under a grant from the Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services (DMHAS)

*Refunds for the luncheon will not be made past 5 days prior to event. Refunds prior to this date will be subject to a $1.00 fee.

 

Tickets are non transferrable unless you contact MLI prior. There may be a waiting list for this event and we ask only those that can committ to attending will register for the event, to be fair to others. In the case that you need to cancel your registration, we ask that you notify us so that we may offer the seating to those next on the list. Thank you.

 

ATTENTION PREVENTION PROVIDERS:  This is a training open to all, but especially for DMHAS funded prevention providers, SPF-SIG/BP and PFS grantees and their members, that should help you apply theory to your SPF-SIG/BP/PFS practice and steps if you are in these categories. If you are not a DMHAS-Funded prevention program provider nor receive these particular program/ grant funds, you are still welcome to attend as it will be relevant to your own work.
